Both varieties of dahlias will be the focal flowers in this arrangement. Trim those with the strongest stems to stand tall in the vase, adding height to the presentation. Snip the others to medium length and place in the front of the vase. All of the dahlias should be arranged to stand out from the supporting foliage.

The smaller flowers of cosmos, pincushion flowers, nigella, and bachelor buttons are easy to grow from packets of seed, even though they appear more commonly in shades of pink and purple. Here, they act as filler flowers and echo the larger, burgundy dahlias. Trim some of them tall to be background flowers, and cut others, especially the chocolate cosmos, short to hang over the edge of the vase.
